International School Award

Belfast High School first achieved the award in 2008 and then we were re-accredited in 2011, 2014 and 2017. The International School Award encourages and supports schools to develop:

• An international ethos embedded throughout the school
• A whole school approach to international work
• Collaborative curriculum-based work with a number of partner schools
• Year-round international activity
• Involvement of the wider community

Here are the assessor’s comments on our Impact Evaluation:

"It is clear that Belfast High School offers many linguistic opportunities to its students and that many departments incorporate international themes within their schemes of work. The school has a number of international partnerships, both European and further afield. These partnerships will undoubtedly help your students become aware of issues affecting different communities across the globe. A variety of languages are learned by the students, both within and outside normal classroom situations. Many of your students are also involved with joint language activities with local primary schools."

Sir Ciarán Devane, CEO of the British Council, said: ‘The school’s fantastic international work has rightfully earned it this prestigious award. The International School Award is a great chance for schools to demonstrate the important work they’re doing to bring the world into their classrooms. Embedding an international dimension in children’s education ensures that they are truly global citizens and helps prepare them for successful lives and careers in an increasingly global economy.’
