QUB Salter’s Festival of Chemistry

On 16 May a team of Year 9 girls travelled to Queen’s University to take part in the annual Salter’s Festival of Chemistry. They were tasked with completing 2 challenges – a Chemistry Egg Race and solving ‘The Mystery of the Missing Centenary Trophy’. The Egg Race involved mixing citric acid, sodium hydrogencarbonate and water in the correct quantities in order to try and reach an exact temperature in the quickest time.

The Missing Trophy task included using techniques such as Chromatography and analysing an unknown powder providing evidence to identify the guilty thief! The team of Leyla Moore, Isabel Stafford, Jessica Wishart and Sarah Moore demonstrated excellent team work and lab skills throughout, and were awarded 1st place in this task, defeating teams from 13 other schools. The day concluded with a Chemical Magic demonstration which involved lots of loud bangs and bright flashes!
