BHS in the Local Community

Belfast High School is always looking for ways in which it can forge useful links with the local community and the French Department came up with a way to help promote one of our oldest local businesses and show our pupils the importance of language learning. It started with Year 10 pupils ‘role-playing’ a receptionist in a French hotel and producing a podcast in French. The response from the pupils was so positive that the school decided to find a way in which they could relate this more effectively to the actual business world. The school has piloted a project called ‘Languages in the Business World’ and asked for help from a local hotel. The management of Dobbins Inn in Carrickfergus was delighted to collaborate and agreed to host 5 Year 10 classes over the next few months. The Inn has recently had a booking from 12 French people from Rennes and they have no materials in French to welcome their guests or to promote the business. Our Year 10 pupils work in teams and, after their fact-finding mission to the hotel, have to produce a product in French which will publicise the Inn or make their guests feel at home. Our pupils are very motivated and excited to discover which of their products will actually be used in the Inn. The decision will be made by a panel chaired by the manager of Dobbins Inn at the end of May.
