A2 Physics Trip to Cern

Members of the U6 Physics classes recently visited the home of the world’s largest particle accelerator (LHC) at CERN, Geneva. After a talk from one of the research Physicists about particle accelerators and particle Physics, the pupils were given a guided tour of CERN and saw first-hand several areas for research including the synchrotron in which the first anti-hydrogen was created.

They also visited the Microcosm and Universe of Particles exhibitions. The pupils were particularly impressed by the size of the hydrogen canister that provides the protons for the large hadron collider (it is very small and could provide enough particles for millions of years of research). During the 3-day trip, the pupils also visited the European Headquarters of the United Nations, explored the old town of Geneva and enjoyed a boat tour of Lake Geneva.
