At Belfast High School, we are proud to offer our students the opportunity to study Media Studies both at AS and A2 with WJEC and are delighted with our track record of excellent results. We are currently delivering the final year of the legacy A2 course and the new WJEC Media Studies specification at AS level.

Media Studies is a contemporary subject for the 21st Century. This intellectually challenging course provides our pupils with the chance to develop the literacy, analytical, research, creative and technical skills required to secure employment within an exciting and fast developing multimillion industry and to become critically aware of the power which our media saturated world has, on our understanding of current society.

Applying their knowledge of key concepts, media language, critical perspectives and media processes, students enjoy analysing and deconstructing a wide variety of media artefacts, both moving image and print based, from media industries such as film, television, music, advertising and news. This media awareness then informs pupils’ individual practical productions.
Facilities and Resources
The Media Studies department is well equipped and has access to a viewing suite for moving image texts as well as to a range of relevant computer based software and digital technology for media production.

To supplement the classroom experience, our students also avail of opportunities to attend the school Film Club, talks by guest speakers, external workshops and to complete their work placement within the media industry. Indeed, many of our pupils have continued their love for the subject into third level education and into employment within the industry.

We are also fortunate to have a team of dedicated Media Studies teachers who regularly avail of professional development opportunities and courses and who are committed to supporting and guiding the pupils within their care, on their Media Studies journey.
