Curriculum

Key Stage 3:

All pupils in Years 8 and 9 study Latin through the Cambridge Latin Course Book I. At the end of Year 9 all pupils complete an introductory course in Classical Greek leading to the EMACT Greek certificate. In Year 10 pupils may choose to continue studying Latin. Classical Civilisation, which focuses on the Ancient Greeks, is also offered.

Key Stage 4:

At GCSE, pupils may choose to study Latin. Pupils who are very good in languages may study Classical Greek. We follow the OCR specification for Latin and Classical Greek. Pupils may also choose Classical Civilisation, in which both the Ancient Greek and Roman cultures are studied. We follow the AQA specification for Classical Civilisation.

Key Stage 5:

At A Level pupils may study Latin. Classical Greek is occasionally offered for pupils who are very good in languages. We follow the OCR specification for Latin and Classical Greek. Pupils may also choose Classical Civilisation, in which both the Ancient Greek and Roman cultures are studied. We follow the AQA specification for Classical Civilisation.

Facilities and Resources

The Department uses interactive whiteboards, computer suites and relevant DVDs to deliver the curriculum. Museum and theatre visits, attendance at Oxbridge open days for Classics and trips to Italy and Greece enhance the pupils’ learning experiences.
